Importing Mastodon posts into your WordPress-database

Being an old-school blogger (going back to 2001, this site going back to 2003) has advantages and disadvantages. A 20-year old blog means having a lot of stuff at one place online. It also means a lot of broken links and images in the archives.

The recent developments at Twitter have made me move to mostly Mastodon (although I’m trying Bluesky as well). Because the character-limit on Mastodon is higher, you might as well post a longer ’toot’ – it’s almost like a blog.

So: can I please import my relevant Mastodon posts into WordPress? Because in 5 years, I probably have this domain, but might have moved on from Mastodon to something else. And therefore: import the posts, not embed the posts.

(In the past, I did embed stuff from Flickr instead of uploading it here. While I have local copies, reuploading those photos here is too much boring work).

Most articles online describe embedding, but these posts helped out:

For now, I chose the PressForward plugin to work with. It does not fully automates the process, but allows for an editorial check which toots are to be processed.

In the future, I look for plugins which do the same, but filter based on tags.
